Five Common WordPress Myths And Why They’re Not True

WordPress sites all look the same, they’re slow, and they’re restrictive. These are just some of the myths we hear about the CMS.

However, here at The SEO Works, we only develop sites using WordPress. Why? Because they’re incredibly customisable and suitable for a variety of websites and businesses.

But, despite this CMS being the most popular in the world, there are still a few stubborn myths that follow WordPress around, putting brands off from using it for their brand.

Today, I’ll take you through five of the most common WordPress myths and why they are simply not true.

1) WordPress Websites Aren’t Secure Enough

Security is a crucial consideration for any website, and some people say that WordPress sites are not secure enough.

However, WordPress is actually incredibly secure, and this can even be increased and monitored in a variety of ways. Since WordPress is open-source, people are constantly working on fixes to potential security loopholes, which helps to keep sites secure.

But, there are also things you can do to keep your own sites secure, such as keeping plugins and themes updated. I’d also recommend installing a security plugin like Wordfence for example, which adds an extra layer of security, as well as monitoring potential security threats to your website.

2) All WordPress Sites Look The Same

We think that the myth ‘All WordPress sites look the same’ is driven by the belief that you must buy an off-the-shelf theme for your site – but you don’t have to!

Here at The SEO Works, we build bespoke themes to suit the exact needs of your business and its brand styles. All of the sites that we build are completely unique and built specifically for your business. You’ll never find any off-the-shelf themes here!

Want to know more about why we never use prebuilt themes? Here are seven reasons why.

3) WordPress Sites Are Slow

Many people believe that WordPress websites are slow due to being ‘bogged down by a huge range of plugins and third-party code.’

It is true that if plugins are used without the correct research, they could be damaging to the speed of your site, making it feel sluggish and clunky.

However, if they’re used correctly, they can benefit your site, not slow it down. They can even increase your options and expand site functionality.

We use a very select library of plugins that are thoroughly tested and that we know will add value to the site. We also ensure that they are kept fully up to date, which allows us to have confidence in their performance levels.

4) WordPress Is Just For Blogging

WordPress is often questioned when being used for full site builds, with people still thinking that it is solely used for blogging purposes.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. WordPress can power many types of websites, from brochure sites all the way to big ecommerce stores.

With the introduction of WordPress’ Gutenberg editor in 2018, WordPress can be used to build visually appealing, incredibly flexible, block-based websites. We have taken the block building approach for the last few years with some really excellent results for our clients.

5) WordPress Sites Are Restrictive

In the past, WordPress sites have been restrictive due to the way the back end of the site was built.

However, modern, best practice build methods combined with the Gutenberg block editor allow for incredible levels of flexibility and mean that website editors get to piece together their website in any way that they would like.

Graham Jones, Head of Web, says, “Whilst there’s a multitude of tools out there for web creation, we’ve opted for a fully bespoke approach.

We have steered away from web builders and ‘off-the-shelf’ themes and instead we follow a custom web design and build approach, designed to address our client’s specific needs, whilst also keeping things streamlined and performance-oriented.

We are WordPress developers primarily, but have developed our own theme utilising WordPress’s Gutenberg block system, which offers scalability, flexibility and ease of use for our clients.”
