The SEO Works has 17+ years of experience in Recruitment SEO
SEO for recruitment agencies means getting found by two very different people: the hiring manager looking for a specialist to brief, and the candidate worth placing. It covers how your job listings are built and indexed, the sector and location pages that win you work, your content, and your authority.
Job boards, staffing firms and recruitment software platforms have the same job to do. We have done this at globlal scale and also at ten-person specialist desk scale.
Why Recruitment Websites Struggle in Search
Most recruitment sites don’t have a content problem, they have a plumbing problem
Think about what your website produces on its own. Every open role becomes a new page. Run 2,000 vacancies through a year and that’s 2,000 new URLs, nearly all built from the same template, most of them dead inside two months. Then add your filters, by sector, location, salary band and contract type, and every combination becomes another URL for Google to find.
Google only crawls so much of any site. On a recruitment domain, a lot of that gets spent on expired roles and filter pages that will never win you anything, while the sector and location pages that actually bring in briefs sit at the back of the queue.
You are selling to two people at once
Your website has to win two completely different searches. A hiring manager types “fintech recruitment agency London”. That’s the search that turns into a brief. A candidate types “product manager jobs Manchester”, or “average data engineer salary UK”, often months before they would apply for anything.
Different people, different intent, different pages. On most of the recruitment sites we audit they are all competing for the same templates, and the site ends up half-serving both audiences and ranking properly for neither.
Common issues in recruitment SEO
Here are some of the most common issues we see:
- Pages that don’t get indexed
Google can’t rank pages it can’t find. Many recruitment sites have thousands of job listings, but poor site structure or technical issues mean they’re never picked up properly. - Duplicate or thin content
Job listings often follow the same format. That’s useful for candidates, but it can look like duplicate content to search engines – which means lower rankings. - Short-lived or expired pages
Jobs come and go quickly. If pages are removed too fast or handled badly, it can lead to broken links or wasted site authority. - No clear location signals
Whether you’ve got branches in different cities or remote roles nationwide, it’s vital to show Google where you operate. Without that, you miss out on local traffic. - Poor site structure
If your site isn’t organised by role, sector or region in a way that makes sense, it’s harder for Google to crawl and understand your content. - Slow or clunky mobile performance
Most job searches happen on a phone. If your site is slow to load or hard to use on mobile, candidates will bounce – and rankings may suffer too.
These aren’t just technical problems – they cost you visibility, traffic, and potential business. The good news is, they’re all fixable with the right approach.

How we optimise websites for the recruitment sector
By conducting a thorough analysis of your recruitment website, your competitors’ websites, and the current marketplace, we can figure out the best strategy for helping your website to come out on top.
Technical SEO and site structure
Crawl budget, indexing, canonicals, URL parameters, JobPosting schema and expiry logic, page speed. This is where recruitment sites lose ground before anyone writes a word. More on our technical SEO.
Sector and location pages
The pages that win briefs. We build them out by sector, role type and region, and we structure them so they support each other instead of competing, which is what usually happens when location pages get generated in bulk. Where you have offices or defined patches, this ties into local SEO.
Splitting the keyword map in two
Client-side and candidate-side keywords go into separate halves, and each half gets assigned to the templates that serve it. That decision shapes the site, so we make it early rather than after the content is written.
Content that earns rankings and links
Salary guides, hiring market reports, sector analysis. These work in recruitment because they answer what both audiences are searching for and they get picked up by trade press. We have writers in-house, so this gets produced rather than subcontracted. See our approach to content marketing.
Digital PR and authority
Recruitment search results are packed with job boards and aggregators carrying far more authority than any single agency site. You close that gap with earned coverage: commentary, data stories, sector press. That’s what our digital PR team is for.
Getting found in AI search
Being recommended by an AI assistant runs on overlapping but not identical signals to ranking on Google. We handle it through GEO services and AEO services, and we report on it separately so you can see both.
Does Any of This Matter if Candidates Just Ask AI?
Search “SEO for recruitment agencies” right now and Google gives you an AI Overview above the results, built from many cited sources. Hiring managers are doing the same thing, asking an assistant which agencies specialise in their sector rather than working down a results page.
How those systems choose who to mention is not particularly mysterious. They cite what they can crawl. They favour pages that answer the question early rather than burying it. They lean on structured data to work out what a business actually does, and they weight third-party mentions heavily when deciding which suppliers to name.
Across our client portfolio we have watched organic traffic and AI citation visibility move independently of each other, which is why we work and report on both. Our GEO services come as part of our SEO plan.
What to expect working with us
We know SEO can seem complicated – especially if you’ve worked with agencies before and didn’t get much clarity. So here’s how it works when you choose us.
We start with a proper benchmarking audit
We don’t guess. We dig into your site and give you a clear picture of what’s working, what’s holding you back, and where the opportunities are. That includes:
- Technical review (site structure, speed, indexing etc)
- Keyword and content analysis
- Competitive benchmarking
- Backlink profile review
You’ll get a plain-English breakdown – no jargon, no padding.
We build a plan with you
Once we’ve reviewed your site, we agree on priorities. We’ll focus on the areas that we think will have the biggest impact first – whether that’s fixing technical problems, improving job page visibility, or attracting better links.
There’s no one-size-fits-all. You’ll get a clear plan based on your site, your goals, and your market.
We fix the foundations
We’ll get your technical SEO in good shape: sorting indexing issues, cleaning up duplicate content, improving page speed and making sure job listings are set up in a way Google understands.
This makes sure all the content on your site has the best chance to perform well.
We grow your visibility
Next, we build on that foundation. We improve your rankings by:
- Targeting relevant keywords and topical clusters
- Producing useful high quality content
- Earning brand mentions and backlinks
- Optimising existing pages for better performance
We’re proactive, always looking for ways to improve visibility and bring the right people to your site.
We report clearly and regularly
You’ll get a monthly report that actually makes sense. No fluff, no inflated numbers – just honest data showing:
- Rankings for your key terms and AI visibility
- Organic traffic
- Conversions and leads
- What we’ve done, and what’s next
- You’ll always know where things stand
We’re always on hand
Questions? Ideas? Want to check something? You’ll have a direct line to your SEO team – no passing you from one person to another. We’re quick to respond and easy to talk to.
“I spent years in the recruitment sector before moving into digital. I understand the pressure recruitment agencies are under: targets to hit, clients to keep happy, roles to fill fast. I also know how important your website is when it comes to visibility and trust. Think of the work we do as digital infrastructure. It helps your recruitment brand grow.”

Recruitment SEO FAQs
What is SEO for recruitment agencies? It’s search optimisation aimed at two audiences at once: hiring clients looking for a specialist to brief, and candidates looking for roles. It combines technical work on how job listings are built and indexed, commercial sector and location pages, content, and earned authority.
How long does recruitment SEO take to work? Most clients see rankings move between months three and four, with results building properly from month six. Your starting point matters. Sites with unresolved indexing problems often move faster once those are fixed, because the content was always there, Google just couldn’t see it. But you need to think of SEO as a medium term investment, with better results developing over time.
How much does it cost? Recruitment SEO campaigns start from £2,000 per month. Where you land depends on the size of your site, how much technical work it needs and how competitive your sectors are. You get a clear quote after a free site audit, with nothing hidden.
Do you work with recruitment agencies of all sizes? Yes, from national names through to single-sector specialist firms.
Can you help if we run a job board or software platform? Yes. We work with job boards, recruitment platforms and SaaS providers.
Do you write content too? Yes. We have in-house writers who understand SEO and recruitment. Whether it’s optimising job category pages or writing location-specific content, we’ll either create it for you, or work with your team to guide the process.
Do you cover both B2C and B2B recruitment firms? Yes. We work with agencies placing candidates and with the platforms and providers serving the industry.
Our site runs on a third-party platform. Is that a problem? Usually not. We’ve worked across most content management systems and plenty of custom builds. Some do carry genuine limitations, and we’ll tell you what’s realistic before you commit to anything.
We already do PPC. Do we need SEO as well? They do different jobs. SEO builds visibility that costs less per lead over time. Plenty of our clients run both and we coordinate across the two.
How do you measure success? Rankings, organic traffic and AI visibility, but what actually counts is enquiries, applications and sign-ups. We agree what success looks like before we start.
What makes you different? We’ve fixed these specific problems on recruitment sites at enterprise scale, REED included. The issues at the top of this page are ones we’ve solved before, not ones we’d be learning on with your site.
